Employee salaries in Malaysia continue to rise, while competition for talent is becoming more precise and role specific.

According to the Salaries & Wages Survey Report 2025 released by the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the mean monthly salaries and wages of Malaysian citizens rose to RM3,803 in 2025, up 4.1% from 2024. The median monthly salary increased by 5.3%, from RM2,793 to RM2,940.

The figures also show a clear pay gap by skill level. Skilled employees earned a mean monthly salary of RM5,799. Semi-skilled employees, who represented 55.6% of all paid employees, earned RM2,714 on average, while low-skilled employees earned RM2,184.

The message for employers is clear: salaries are rising, but successful hiring depends on more than pay alone. Job location, skill requirements, employment terms and the speed of the recruitment process all influence whether the right candidates apply and accept an offer.

Higher average pay does not make every vacancy easier to fill

The mean monthly salary of RM3,803 and the median of RM2,940 describe different aspects of the labour market.

The mean can be lifted by higher earners. The median means that half of paid employees earn above this level and half earn below it. If employers rely only on the national mean when setting salaries, they may miss the actual conditions affecting a specific industry, location or role.

DOSM data also shows sizeable differences between sectors. Mean monthly salaries were RM6,175 in mining and quarrying, RM3,993 in services, RM3,357 in manufacturing, RM3,188 in construction and RM2,575 in agriculture.

For employers recruiting retail staff, warehouse and logistics workers, operators, food service staff and other frontline roles, candidates usually assess more than basic pay. Commuting distance, shift schedules, commission structures, overtime calculations, EPF and SOCSO contributions, leave and career progression can all affect whether a candidate applies or accepts a position.

Job appeal therefore comes from employment terms that are clear, complete and realistic.

Three questions employers need to answer

First, does the salary match the local market and the skills required?

DOSM data identifies Selangor, Johor and Sarawak among the states with large shares of Malaysian paid employees. Cost of living, talent supply and commuting conditions vary by location. Employers should set pay according to the actual workplace and difficulty of the role, instead of applying one package across every market.

Second, can candidates understand the job advertisement?

Listings that say only “salary negotiable” or provide a vague job description make it difficult for candidates to judge whether the role meets their expectations. A clear salary range, location, working hours, language requirements, required skills and benefits can reduce unsuitable applications and save time in follow-up communication.

Third, can the employer reach suitable candidates quickly?

Frontline roles are often recruited frequently and need to be filled quickly. Employers who only wait for applications may miss candidates who are actively looking for work. Recruitment therefore needs to move towards proactive search and timely communication.

JOBPD connects job requirements with candidate needs more quickly

JOBPD focuses on Malaysia’s frontline and blue-collar recruitment market, giving employers a mobile channel to connect with talent.

Employers can actively search for candidates by criteria such as location and skills, narrowing the screening pool. After identifying a suitable candidate, they can communicate directly through the platform to confirm work experience, availability and job preferences. For businesses hiring retail, service, operator or logistics staff across different locations, this approach can reduce unproductive screening and keep recruitment conversations focused.

Salary remains a major factor in a candidate’s decision, but clear job information and smooth communication also shape hiring outcomes. Employers can strengthen their position by explaining the value of each role accurately, helping suitable candidates discover the opportunity and decide whether to explore it further.

The 2025 salary data reflects the broader direction of employee income in Malaysia. In the current hiring environment, employers need to adjust salary setting, job communication and candidate outreach together.

With JOBPD, employers can publish clear and accurate job information, actively identify candidates who match their location and skill needs, and begin conversations promptly—bringing each recruitment effort closer to the company’s actual workforce requirements.
