As a newcomer, making mistakes is inevitable. Many people's first reaction is to hide, make excuses, or fall into endless self-blame. However, managers value your attitude toward mistakes and your speed in solving them much more.

I. Inform Immediately, Do Not Try to "Hide" It

  • Principle: The earlier bad news travels, the smaller the loss.

  • Action: Once you spot a mistake, tell your direct supervisor immediately. Say: "Boss, I'm sorry, I found a data error in Project A's report. I want to explain the situation to you right away."

  • Reason: Hiding a mistake only makes it snowball until it becomes unmanageable.

II. Apologize with a "Remedy Plan"

Don't just go and say "I'm sorry."

  • Action: While reporting the error, provide at least one solution. For example: "I’ve checked the affected sections. I have two remedies: one is to work late tonight to re-verify, and the other is to contact the other company to explain. Which do you prefer?"

  • Effect: This makes your boss see you as a responsible person with problem-solving skills.

III. Summarize the Reason and Promise Not to Repeat It

  • Action: After the issue is resolved, do a quick review. Was it a lack of familiarity with the process or just carelessness?

  • Action: "This happened because I didn't do a second check. From now on, I will use a checklist to ensure every piece of data is confirmed twice before being sent out."

Summary

Making a mistake isn't scary; losing credibility is. By informing early, providing solutions, and summarizing improvements, you can turn a workplace error into an opportunity to show you are reliable and capable of growth.
