The Opportunity
The Patent Attorney is responsible for protecting and advancing the company’s intellectual property portfolio, with a primary focus on inventions, product innovations, designs, and related IP strategy. This role exists to identify patentable innovations, manage patent filing and prosecution activities, advise the business on IP risks and opportunities, and help create defensible commercial advantage through effective protection of innovation.
This role exists to support the business in its expansion especially for high level electronic smart toys and other complex new patent applications.
Key Responsibilities
Identify patentable inventions arising from product development, engineering, and design activities.
Draft, file, and manage patent applications in Australia and relevant international jurisdictions.
Oversee patent prosecution, oppositions, renewals, and portfolio maintenance.
Conduct prior art, freedom-to-operate, validity, and infringement reviews.
Advise internal stakeholders on IP strategy, patent risk, confidentiality, ownership, and invention capture processes.
Work closely with product, engineering, and leadership teams to align IP protection with commercial priorities.
Support disputes, enforcement matters, licensing discussions, and external counsel management as required.
Maintain accurate patent records, deadlines, and reporting on portfolio status and spend.
What We’re Looking For
Essential
Qualified Patent Attorney registered to practise in KL, or eligible for registration.
Strong experience in patent drafting, filing, and prosecution.
Experience advising on patentability, infringement, validity, and freedom-to-operate issues.
Ability to interpret technical concepts and work closely with engineering and product teams.
Strong stakeholder management, written communication, and commercial judgement.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage deadlines
Nice-to-have
Experience in consumer play products including smart toys, mechanical devices, industrial design, or related manufacturing sectors.
Experience managing international patent portfolios.
Exposure to trade marks, designs, licensing, disputes, or broader IP advisory work.
In-house legal or commercial environment experience.
